Living Expenses and Costs

Standard Resident Contribution

All residents in aged care are required to pay a basic standard resident contribution daily fee as a contribution towards care and living expense. The standard resident contribution fee for all residents equates to 85% of the basic single age pension, currently $51.21 per day. This rate increases on the 20th March and 20th September each year in line with changes to the Age Pension.

Berrington Club Advantage

All residents of Berrington are required to pay a daily Berrington 5 Star Services Club Fee and a deferred Berrington 5 Star Services Club Fee as a contribution towards the exceptional, additional and extra, increased standard of living accommodation, care and hospitality services and living environment expense. The daily Berrington Club Fee is currently $55.00 per day discounted to $36.40 per day for all residents. The Berrington Club Fee daily rate increase on the 1st July each year in line with changes to the Consumer Price Index, all baskets, average all Australian capital cities.

Care Co-contribution

This is an additional contribution towards the cost of care that some permanent residents may be required to pay depending on their assets and income. It is calculated by the Department of Human Resources or the Department of Veteran Affairs based on information provided in the Income and Assets Assessment form. The rate is revised by the government quarterly. The resident pays the required amount direct to the aged care provider which reduces the amount of care subsidy paid from the government to the provider. There is an annual cap, currently $27,532.59 and a lifetime cap, currently $66,078.27, that apply to the means test care fee. Once these caps are reached the resident cannot be asked to pay any more mean-tested care fees. Any income-tested care fees paid in a Home Care Package prior to moving into an aged care facility will also contribute to the annual and lifetime caps.

Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD)

Based on the outcome of the Income and Asset Assessment, some people will have their accommodation costs met in full or in part by the government, while others will need to pay the accommodation price agreed with the aged care provider. The Refundable Accommodation Deposit is a lump sum payment for accommodation in an aged care facility and is fully refundable when a resident leaves the facility. Residents can choose to pay the RAD (Refundable Accommodation Deposit) in full or pay a combination of a smaller RAD and a Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) All rooms have a pre-determined Refundable Accommodation Deposit. These can be found on website under the Accommodation Vacancy & Pricing tab.

Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP)

The Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) applies if a RAD (Refundable Accommodation Deposit) has not been paid in full. The daily accommodation payment (DAP) is calculated by multiplying the outstanding amount of the agreed RAD (refundable accommodation deposit) by the current maximum permissible interest rate and dividing by 365 (days per year).

Financial Hardship

Financial Hardship Assistance is available for clients who have difficulty affording the fees for residential care. To apply for financial hardship assistance you must complete and lodge the relevant Department of Human Services Application for financial hardship assistance form.
